STROMYNKA STATION
The site is determined by the Sokolniki park, and the famous Sokolniki metrostation.
The architectural concept of the station is based on the reinterpretation of traditional russian metro design mixed with minimalistic space concept and information technology, as a contemporary representation of infrastructure architecture. The contrast of the simplicity of the space and the extreme complexity of the hanging object provocate tension in the interior. This contrast is even stronger with the general lack of colors and the use of gold on the lamp.
The columns, the beams, the ceiling of the central space is covered with white, shiny glass mosaic. The materials of the station are related to the iconic Sokolniki station: the floor is grey marble (or granite), the columns are white mosaic tiles, what makes the transparent, and clear.
The silent, but strong main element of light installation is the 160 meters long “golden” chandelier in the central hall. It is made of steel tubes. The purpose of the element is not only lightning, but functions as an artistic installation. The color and the intensity of the LEDs are changeable and programmable. In some of the branches of the chandelier there are integrated projectors projecting artworks on the columns and the ceiling.
On the glass wall between the train and the platform we use printed glass with black and white graphic. The pattern is the image of the Sokolniki park forest.
If it is possible, it would be a very strong concept to let natural light in the station (in the second phase of the competition).
